Intro
PEMEC replaced the existing chillers and pump sets at a UK semiconductor manufacturing facility with larger units and all interconnecting pipework, to increase system capacity. The works ran from February to April 2026.
Project Objective
The existing plant was inefficient and unable to meet capacity demands, so larger chillers and pump sets were installed to increase system capacity. A key milestone was the removal of the existing chiller units and the installation of the new units, along with the associated pipework, within a four-week programme.
Project Scope
The mechanical scope included:
- Removal of all existing equipment and associated pipework
- Installation and positioning of new chillers
- Installation and positioning of new primary pump sets and cooling tower pump sets
- Installation of all interconnecting pipework between the new equipment, including chilled water pipework from the chiller units and complex pipework routing for the chiller unit
Approach and delivery
A spider crane was utilised to safely lift and position the chiller units and pump sets within the restricted site conditions.
During the works, it was identified that the existing gaskets vontained asbestos. A specialist contractor was engaged to undertake the asbestos removal works in accordance with statutory requirements.
The project was successfully delivered on time and within budget.
